RON'S PERSPECTIVE - ROADS TO SUFFER UNDER CURRENT BUDGET
Full Description:
Each year the road system in Hanover as well as other communities, takes a terrible beating from the hot summers and freezing winters. The movement of heavy traffic as well as the damaged caused by ice, road salts and penetrating water seepage, takes its toll in pot holes, broken pavement and the like. Saddle Road, Mountain Avenue and I'm sure a host of others are examples.
Over the years and in the township annual budget has been an allocation for road repair and resurface. Traditionally this has been between 1 million and $700,000. Each year our engineering department surveys and selects 5 roads for repairs. Still not enough to stay ahead of the damage.
This year, 2009, no money has been assigned to road resurfacing and the matter worsens.
A grant will provide money to Hanover for the resurfacing of Ridgedale Avenue, from Rt10 to Malapardis Road. Otherwise there are no funds for any other roads in our town.
Roads and the infrastructure of Hanover are primary. Their condition is a matter of safety to us all and needless to say, they should not be neglected in any municipal budget. Yes. Money is tight for all municipalities. But matters of our safety and welfare should always come first.
Ask yourselves what that is worth? A possible tax increase or cuts in other areas to hold off even greater future expense. A small sum to assure our safety.
Write your Committee and ask their support to keep Hanover in good repair.
